ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ॥

ਮਹਲਾ ੫॥ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ - ਪੰਨਾ ੭੪੭॥ ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਪਾਖੰਡ ਜੋ ਦੀਸਹਿ ਤਿਨ ਜਮੁ ਜਾਗਾਤੀ ਲੂਟੈ॥
ਨਿਰਬਾਣ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਗਾਵਹੁ ਕਰਤੇ ਕਾ ਨਿਮਖ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਜਿਤੁ ਛੂਟੈ॥ ੧॥
ਅਰਥ: ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ! ਦਿਖਾਵੇ ਦੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਕਰਮ-ਕਾਂਡ ਕਿਸੇ ਭੀ
ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੇ। ਇਸ ਲਈ, ਸਾਨੂੰ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ
ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਸਦਕਾ ਅਸੀਂ ਦੁਨਿਆਵੀਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਛੁੱਟਕਾਰਾ ਪਾ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ। (੧)
Whatever rituals and formal religious ceremonies are
performed by the hypocrites yield no fruitful results. In fact, let us sing the
praises of the True Lord with devotion, so that we could get rid of all the
worldly afflictions. (1)
ਸੰਤਹੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਰੀਐ॥ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਬਚਨੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਸੰਤਨ ਕਾ ਸੋ ਗੁਰ
ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਤਰੀਐ॥ ੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ॥
ਅਰਥ: ਹੇ ਸਤਿਸੰਗੀਓ, ਜੇ ਸੰਸਾਰਕਿ ਦੁੱਖ-ਤਕਲੀਫ਼ਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ
ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਹੋ, ਸਾਨੂੰ ਗੁਰਮੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਕਰਕੇ, ਸੱਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਤਾਂ
ਜੋ ਅਸੀਂ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੀ ਰਹਿਮਤ ਦੇ ਪਾਤਰ ਬਣ ਸਕੀਏ (੧ - ਰਹਾਉ)
O fellow devotees, if we wish to attain emancipation in life,
then let us recite the True Naam while participating in the congregation of the
Guru-minded persons and seek God’s refuge.
ਕੋਟਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਮਜਨ ਇਸਨਾਨਾ ਇਸੁ ਕਲਿ ਮਹਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਭਰੀਜੈ॥
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਕਰਿ ਲੀਜੈ॥ ੨॥
ਅਰਥ: ਕ੍ਰੋੜਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਕਈ ਤੀਰਥ-ਅਸਥਾਨਾਂ ਵਿਖੇ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ
ਪਰ, ਇੰਜ ਕੋਈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਸਚਿਆਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣ ਸਕਦਾ, ਸਗੋਂ ਹੋਰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਫਸ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਪਰ,
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਗੁਰਮੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਕਰਕੇ, ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ
ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਸਫਲਾ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। (੨)
Countless persons visit the various holy places and perform
rituals but instead of becoming pious persons, they get filled with filth of
egoism. Whereas those persons, who recite God’s True Naam in the company of
Guru-minded persons, lead satiated life. (2)
ਬੇਦ ਕਤੇਬ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਭਿ ਸਾਸਤ ਇਨ੍ਹ ਪੜਿਆ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ॥
ਏਕੁ ਅਖਰੁ ਜੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਪੈ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸੋਈ॥ ੩॥
ਅਰਥ: ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਬਿਆਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਜੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਧਰਮਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ
ਪੜ੍ਹ ਲਈਏ ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਅਸੀਂ ਦੁਨਿਆਵੀਂ ਦੁੱਖ-ਤਕਲੀਫਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ। ਪਰ, ਜੇ
ਕੋਈ ਗੁਰਮੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਗ੍ਰਹਿਣ ਕਰ ਲਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਸਫਲਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ
ਹੈ। (੩)
One cannot attain emancipation by merely reading the various
religious books but the Guru-minded person, who understands the essence of God’s
True Naam, gets truly acclaimed and praised being a true devotee. (3)
ਖਤ੍ਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਸੂਦ ਵੈਸ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਚਹੁ ਵਰਨਾ ਕਉ ਸਾਝਾ॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਉਧਰੈ ਸੋ ਕਲਿ ਮਹਿ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਾਝਾ॥ ੪॥ ੩॥ ੫੦॥
ਅਰਥ: ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਰੂਹਾਨੀ ਗਿਆਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ, ਗੁਰੂ ਅਰਜਨ ਸਾਹਿਬ
ਬਿਆਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਤਾਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀਆਂ ਲਈ ਇਕੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਉਹ
ਹਿੰਦੂਆਂ ਦੇ ਚਾਰ ਵਰਨਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ, ਖੱਤ੍ਰੀ, ਵੈਸ਼ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ੂਦਰ ਹੋਂਣ! ਜੇਹੜਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸੰਸਾਰਕਿ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਛੁਟਕਾਰਾ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਹਰੇਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਕੋ ਜਿਹੀ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ। (੪/੩/੫੦)

Arjan Sahib says that God’s Divine Enlightenment is common to all persons
including four Hindu castes, described as Brahmins (priestly class), Khatris
(warriors), Vaishs (traders) and Shudras (labourers). But those persons, who
recite God’s True Naam and perceive the same True Lord pervading all the human
beings equally, get rid of all the ills and thus truly attain emancipation.
